By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, May 22 The All Assam Students Union (AASU) today severely condemned the failure of the State Government to hold the South Asian (formerly South Asian Federation SAF) Games in the State.

In a statement here this evening, the students body has described the decision of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to not to hold the SAF Games in the State on the pretext of lack of infrastructure to accommodate the sports persons who would be taking part in the Games, as a damaging one. This decision of the Chief Minister has exposed the inefficiency and insincerity of the State Government, said the students body.

The State Government has expressed its inability to hold an international sports event when it is trying its level best to attract foreign investment to the State and the Chief Minister is also undertaking trips to foreign countries for the purpose, the students body said and described it as a shameful development.

Namrup Fertiliser: The students body hailed the decision of the Central Cabinet to set up the fourth unit of the Namrup Fertiliser Factory with an investment of Rs 4,500 crore. However, it has raised the demand to revive the Ashok Paper Mill. With the raw materials to run the paper mill available in abundance, there should not be any reason as to why it could not be revived, the students body said.

Anniversary of State Govt: The All Guwahati Students Union (AGSU) has opposed the move of the State Government to make the presence of teachers obligatory in the functions to celebrate its fourth anniversary as an absurd act.

The State Government has issued the above order to the teachers at a time when the Fourth Semester examinations of the degree courses of Gauhati University are on, said the students body.
