Govt failed to protect historical monuments

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, July 8 Public activist Prof Deven Dutta came down heavily on the elected representatives of the State questioning their integrity towards preservation and protection of historical monuments.

Prof Dutta demanded that issues like preservation and maintenance of ancient monuments be discussed at length at the ensuing Assembly session, which begins on July 11.

The government has neglected the preservation of our ancient monuments and relics, which are reminiscent of our past, Prof Dutta told media persons on Thursday.

Referring to the Momai Kota Garh, Numaligarh, Rajgarh, Potaligarh, Arimattagarh and Samdhoragarh among the few which are losing their identity, the public activist demanded the opposition to raise the issue in the ensuing session.

During 2000-2001, the Archaeological Survey of India and the Assam State Archaeology Department had excavated various valuable items from the Sivasagar maidam like gold and copper utensils and a sword. There is no trace of these items, besides the gold-plated legs of the kings bedstead. They may have been smuggled to foreign shores, he stated.
