Govt failed to ensure womens safety: AJP

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Oct 8 - The conveners of Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) have slammed the BJP governments in the State and the Centre for their total failure to ensure womens safety in Assam and across the country.

Citing the latest NCRB data on Crime Against Women, the regional partys conveners Basanta Deka and Dr KG Bhattacharya today said that at a time the government made tall claims of women empowerment through slogans like Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao, the overall situation of crime against women in the country and particularly Assams performance in the NCRB report present a picture in sharp contrast.

Assam has topped the chart for rate of crime against women in the country for the third consecutive year, as per the 2019 NCRB data. In 2017, the rate of crime against women in Assam was 143.3 (against one lakh women), whereas the corresponding national figure was 57.9. Again in 2018, the rate of crime against women in Assam increased to 166.

It is almost three times the national average and in 2019, crime against women in Assam has increased to 177.8 against the national average of 62.4, the AJP stated.

As per NCRB data, compared to 2018, the rate of crime against women in India has risen by 7.3 per cent, with the country recording an average of 87 rape cases every day.

The party also asked Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to explain as to why the condition of women has deteriorated in State in the past three years.

Another BJP-ruled State Utter Pradesh is in headlines for gruesome incidents of rape and killing. It clearly projects that women are not safe under the BJP rule, the party conveners said.

The party further stated that unless there is a change in the socio-economic and political situation of the country, and adequate seats are reserved in the Lok Sabha for women, the problems of women in India would continue to exist.
