NAGAON, Jan 30 - Massive protests and uproar against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill continued in Nagaon on Wednesday. Anti-government as well as anti-BJP slogans pervaded the town over the issue.
Keeping aside official duties in their respective offices, thousands of government employees and members of the All Nagaon district employees union (Sadou Nagaon Zila Karmachari Parishad) and hundreds of AGP activists and workers on Wednesday morning came out on the streets and staged protests against the proposed Bill.
The employees of the various departments of the district boycotted official work and assembled in front of the office of Deputy Commissioner, Nagaon and staged sit-in protests against the bill for over four hours. The employees shouted various anti-BJP slogans over the issue and claimed that jobs would be not bigger than the identity of the greater Assamese community and demanded its immediate withdrawal.
Simultaneously, hundreds of AGP activists and workers took out a protest rally against the proposed bill throughout greater Nagaon town. The activists shouted anti-BJP slogans over the bill and urged both the BJP-led alliance governments at the Centre as well as in the State to withdraw the bill. The agitators staged a road blockade on the old NH 37 near Nowgong College which caused a heavy traffic congestion for over an hour.
On the other hand, some activists of Nagaon district unit of the All Assam Students� Union (AASU) and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) separately showed black flag to the State BJP president Ranjit Kumar Dass and Union Minister of State for Railway Rajen Gohain at Barhampur and Gumuthagaon Tiniali respectively when they were on their way to attend a meeting at Barhampur. Police immediately seized the flags from the activists and also picked up eight activists of AASU and two workers of AJYCP from the spot.
