Govt doctor placed under suspension

By Correspondent

MANGALDAI, June 6 The State Health Department has placed Dr Rumki Paul the controversial medical officer of Kharupetia Primary Health Centre in Darrang, who declared a living new-born baby dead after illegally performing the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) of the mother on May 26 last. The Health department vide letter No. HLA 385/2015/15-A issued on June 2 suspended Dr Paul with immediate effect.

Mention may be made that Dr Rumki Paul had termed a living six-month foetus as dead and performed the surgery upon the mother for the delivery of the baby. Immediately after the surgery, the doctor wrapped the baby in a polythene bag and handed it over to the father terming it as dead. But much to the astonishment of the shocked father, the dead baby made some movements inside the polythene bag. When the father informed the doctor, she immediately left the scene without taking minimum care and treatment of both the new-born and the mother. The family members then raised a hue and cry and informed the police who without any delay shifted both the new born and the mother to Mangaldai Civil Hospital where the baby was declared dead. Dr Paul had allegedly taken Rs 2500 from the husband of Eliza Begum for performing the delivery, that too, in a government hospital.

A case has also been registered in Kharupetia Police Station (Case No. 128/15 under section 384/312/315/316) against Dr Paul who has been absconding since the evening of May 26.
