Govt decisions to harm people: Yechury

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 13 Alleging that the recent North East-related decisions of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government would hamper the interest of the region and its people, senior CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury today said the Modi governments treatment towards the North East was not fair.

Critical of the overall conduct of Union government, the CPI(M) politburo member also charged that the arrogance of the majority in the Lok Sabha was palpable in many decisions of the government that included doing away with the tradition of Parliamentary scrutiny over legislations through Standing Committees.

Addressing mediapersons here, Yechury said the recent developments related to the North East Industrial Policy, mega dam and discontinuation of subsidised ration to the tea garden workers were not acceptable and such issues need to be raised cogently in Parliament.

Projects related to the development of the North East must not be put on hold. The matter not just concerns the MPs of the region in the Parliament, but others as well, he added.

On food ration to the tea garden workers, he said subsidised ration was a part of the wage negotiations a practice that has evolved over the decades. It was an arrangement between the tea garden owners and the workers. Instead of taking the side of workers, the government decided in favour of the owners, he added.

The Modi government is abandoning the traditional practice of examining Bills by Parliamentary Standing Committees and getting its recommendations on important issues, he added.

Also attacking the Union government for a fall in industrial and foodgrain production, he said the countrys economic situation was deteriorating further. The government would use this bleak economic situation as an opportunity to cut the subsidies being provided to the underprivileged sections, he mentioned.

On social issues, too, he said, the mass conversion campaign, communal comments by BJP leaders in Parliament and in public, were the dirty vote bank politics to consolidate Hindu votes that was leading the country towards social conflict.

Hopeful about the future prospects of Left parties in the region, the CPI (M) leader said that people were disillusioned with the Congress and BJP governments.
