Govt blamed for self-immolation

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Feb 24 - The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) today blamed wrong policies of the State Government for the self-immolation by KMSS activist Pranab Boro.

AIUDF general secretary and MLA Hafiz Bashir Ahmed Kasimi said that while the government has a responsibility to provide land pattas to the landless people, it has shown lack of sincerity in adopting a proper policy.

Kasimi said the governments failure in this regard has forced people to adopt desperate measures. He demanded that a correct policy be adopted to satisfy the demands of the landless people.

Meanwhile, the Communist Party of India (CPI) also blamed the State Government for its failure in taking any preventive measure despite KMSS prior announcement of an agitation.

CPI state secretariat member Dambaru Bora said KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi is also responsible for the incident as he incited the common people.

Bora called upon the government to amend the British-era land holding laws and adopt new ones to make the laws compatible with the present times.

AGP leader and former Chief Minister PK Mahanta blamed the State Government for the self-immolation by KMSS member Pranab Boro.

Mahanta said instead of opting for negotiations the government adopted a policy of confrontation and this resulted in the tragic incident today.

He said the State Government has resorted to cheap politics in the name of allotment of land pattas and accused it of undertaking the exercise to provide allotments based on political expediency, instead of sound judgement.

Mahanta said the Tarun Gogoi-led government has over the last 13 years made it a habit of trying to crush peoples movements.
