Govt assistance to financially weak families

GUWAHATI, Aug 12 - State Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today announced that the government will provide an assistance of Rs 830 per month to 17 lakh families of weaker financial background under the Orunodoi scheme from October 2 this year.

The State exchequer will have to shell out Rs 210 crore every month for the ambitious scheme, which was announced in the last budget.

Talking to media persons here this afternoon, the minister said the amount will be deposited to the beneficiary�s account till the family becomes financially dependent. It would be a must for the beneficiary family to nominate a woman in whose account the money will be deposited.

The scheme�s implementation work will commence on August 17 and the beneficiaries will be selected by district committees. Under the scheme, priority will be given to widow, divorced, unmarried or separated woman along with families with specially abled member.

The composite income of the household should be less than Rs 2 lakh per annum.

�Apart from Rs 830, there will be a variable amount that will be paid to the beneficiary to meet their special needs like flood, school admission fees or festivity expenditure, depending on the financial capability of the government. The beneficiary family can take their own decision as to where they want to spend the amount,� he said.

Sarma further stated that till September 15, the State government will announce a welfare scheme every week and accordingly, implementation will be done.
