By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, June 23 - The State Directorate of Social Welfare has written to the state government for changing the name of Government BDS Deaf and Dumb School of Kahilipara, and replacing it with a more sensitive and appropriate nomenclature.

The Government Bhauri Devi Sarawgi School, meant for the students with hearing impairment was established in 1949, and it is one among the prominent government institutions for the students with hearing impairment.

However, with changing times, despite a more sensitive approach world over towards the persons with disabilities, the previous nomenclature mentioning the term deaf and dumb is being kept with the schools name.

The Social Welfare Director has sought government approval for changing the nomenclature in both English and Assamese languages.

The directorate has suggested the names Bhauri Devi Sarawgi Govt School for Hearing Impaired, in English and Bhauri Devi Sarawgi Shravan Badhagrasta Sarkari Bidyalaya in Assamese.
