Govt apathy forcing farmers to dump milk

By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, June 5 Though the Government is emphasizing more on self-employment generation, it is not extending the required support to those who are working with dedication to get themselves self-employed.

At least this fact comes out from the ordeals faced by the dairy farmers of Bajali area in Barpeta district of the State. These dairy farmers, organized under the banner of Bajali Co-ordination Committee of the Dairy Co-operative Society, are forced on occasions to dump huge amounts of their milk or milk products into the river.

The Committee said in a statement here today that its members produce between 6,000 litres and 8,000 litres of milk in a day. But due to lack of bulk cooler machine, their milk go sour and the farmers are made to pay for the loss.

Moreover, there is no initiative on the part of the Government to supply cattle feed at low cost, nor there is any step to extend financial aid and impart training to the farmers.

The plight of these dairy farmers, most of whom are educated unemployed youths, can be well guessed from the fact that they had to communicate with the buyers like the Purabi Dairy in vain for years together, to sell their milk at remunerative price.

Besides, the buyers like the Central Dairy, Khanapara are not paying these farmers regularly for the purchases it is making from them.
