GUWAHATI, Aug 11 Governor J B Patnaik today expressed concern over the unabated erosion in Majuli river island and laid stress on a permanent solution to the problem facing this unique river island. He also assured a delegation of the Sanmilito Gana Shakti, Assam (SGSA) that he would discuss the issue with the authorities concerned.

The Governor also assured steps to build two bridges at Khabalughat and Lohit Ghat to link the river island with Lakhimpur town on the north bank through road, said an SGSA press release.

Meanwhile, Dr Bhumidhar Barman who is looking after day-to-day administration of the State on behalf of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, today assured the SGSA delegation that he would hold a high-level meeting involving the officials of the Brahmaputra Board, States Water Resources and Revenue Departments, before August 15, SGSA president Dr Ranoj Pegu said.

The meeting will deliberate upon the urgent measures that needed to be taken to check erosion in the river island, Dr Barman told the SGSA delegation.

The SGSA said in its press release that due to the faulty schemes and indifference of the Brahmaputra Board, the

Brahmaputra has intensified its erosion between Sumoimari Check Dam and Pohardia Gaon. This has rendered many families homeless and paddy fields of a vast area have also been eroded away by the mighty river.

But the Government has not taken any urgent and effective steps to check erosion in the island. This apathy on the part of the Government has posed a serious threat to the Majuli Road, which is regarded to be the protective shield by the people of the island, said the SGSA in its press release.

The SGSA delegation led by its president Dr Ranoj Pegu, MLA Bhuban Pegu and spokesman Khageswar Saikia, placed the demand for urgent steps to save Majuli from the erosion of the Brahmaputra, said the SGSA in its press release.
