GUWAHATI, April 27 � Governor J B Patnaik today assured the university authorities of the State steps to redress their grievances. The Governor told them that he would take up the related matters with the authorities concerned in right earnest. The Governor was addressing a meeting of the Vice Chancellors (VCs) and representatives of the State and Central Universities of the State at the Raj Bhawan here.
Official sources here said that the gathering of the VCs and representatives of the Universities were told by senior officials of the State Government that a Cabinet memorandum was under preparation on the issue of University Grants Commission (UGC) pay scales to the teachers and non-teaching staff of the State Universities.
Addressing the meeting, Dibrugarh University VC Dr KK Deka urged for steps to extend the service period of the State University teachers and employees up to 65 years in line with the Central Universities. He also pleaded for a development fund of Rs 50 crore. Besides, he said, the Central Government package meant for the Central Universities should be made available for the State Universities too.
Gauhati University VC Prof OK Medhi said that fund constraints have been affecting development activities in the University. He pleaded for an assistance of Rs 100.7 crore for the current financial year.
KK Handique State Open University VC Prof Srinath Baruah pleaded for enhancing the grants-in-aid to the State Universities. He said that the University would require an amount of Rs 2.7 crore this financial year to implement its developmental schemes. Moreover, the University needs a plot of 80 bighas of land, he said.
Assam Agricultural University (AAU) VC Dr KM Bujarbaruah said that his University needed an assistance of Rs 25 crore, while VC of the Bodoland University Prof Mohanlal Brahma pleaded for steps to provide power connection to the university buildings and adequate funds. He was asked by the Governor to provide concrete proposals for the purpose.
VC of the Tezpur University Dr M K Choudhury urged for steps to improve the 8.4 km-long access road to the university immediately. The Governor asked the Chief Engineer of the PWD (Roads) to visit the University within a week�s time and to submit a report on the matter mentioning specifically the time required for improving the condition of the road.
Assam University Pro-VC Prof GD Sarma made a similar plea to improve the condition of the access road to the university between Silchar town and university campus. He also urged for steps to remove the problems of water and power scarcity in the university campus.
Pointing to the problem of encroachment on the land of the University�s Diphu campus, he urged for immediate steps to free the university land from encroachment, said the sources.
The meeting was also attended by Education Minister Gautam Bora, Additional Secretary (in-charge of Education) H N Caire, Principal Secretary Finance HS Das, Principal Secretary, Agriculture RT Jindal, Commissioner and Secretary, Higher Education L S Changsan and Chief Engineer, PWD (Roads) BK Das.
