Governor urges voters to exercise their franchise freely

SHILLONG, Jan 27 - Unfurling the Tricolour during the 69th Republic Day celebrations here at Polo Grounds, Governor Ganga Prasad urged eligible voters of the State, especially youths, to exercise their rights of franchise �freely and in the best traditions of peace and harmony.�

Meghalaya would go for Assembly elections on February 27 and results would be declared on March 3. The voters list includes over 18 lakh eligible voters, out of which 86,000 are first time voters.

The Governor said that the State Election Department has undertaken comprehensive activities for the conduct of elections, registration of voters, preparation of electoral rolls and other related programmes as mandated, by the Election Commission of India.

In this regard, the National Voters Day (January 25) was celebrated to create awareness amongst citizens about inclusive participation in the election process with varieties of youth oriented events like Democracy Marathon, Kite flying, Voters Pledge and other meaningful and interesting programmes.

�There has been an upswing in the number of voters registered due to intensive campaigns being undertaken through various innovative exercises,� Prasad said. He added that eligible voters are encouraged to enrol themselves in the electoral rolls and to whole heartedly participate in the elections by casting their votes.
