Governor urged to cancel notification

NILAMBAZAR, Aug 4 - The people of South Karimganj Block have urged the Governor to cancel the notification regarding shifting the headquarters of South Karimganj Development Block from Kaliganj to Nilambazar.

It is to be mentioned here that the Principal Secretary to the Govt of Assam, Department of Panchayat and Rural Development has issued a notification regarding shifting the headquarters of South Karimganj Development Block from Kaliganj to Nilambazar on June 28. Actually South Karimganj Development Block is the second largest block of Assam. out of 21 Gaon Panchayats, 5 GPs are under Badarpur constituency, 5 GPs in North Karimganj and the rest in South Karimganj constituency.

The people of the vast South Karimganj Block area have submitted a memorandum to the Governor where they have mentioned that Kaliganj is the heart and central point of the Block. This block was established at Kaliganj in 1964 on a donated land covering an area of 33 bighas. The people of several GPs of South Karimganj Development Block area alleged that the P & RD Deptt has issued the said arbitrary notification without any reasonable reason. They have also submitted separate memorandums urging the same to the Minister P & RD Assam, Principal Secretary, Commissioner, Deptt. of P & RD and the Deputy Commissioner, Karimganj.

Besides, a protest meeting was also held at Kaliganj Bazar recently under the chairmanship of Gauranga Bhattacharjee. An agitational body was also formed in the said meeting with Bivash Bardhan and Tutiur Rahman as the president and secretary respectively.
