NEW DELHI, Aug 30 Governor of Assam J B Patnaik called on Union Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Dr C P Joshi to discuss the implementation of various schemes under the Ministry of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj in Assam, at Krishi Bhawan here today.

The Governor highlighted the issues related to the flagship programmes in the State. Dr Joshi assured that the Centre is committed to provide all support to Assam Government in the implementation of the programmes, official sources said.

The Minister said that timely financial assistance would be provided to Assam so that the benefits reach out to the needy and the poor in the rural areas of the State, sources said.

As reported earlier, Assam is among a handful of States, which have slipped in implementation of the flagship programmes of the UPA Government. The report card prepared by the Union Rural Development Ministry was bad news for Tarun Gogoi Government.

Assam has slipped in implementation of the MGNREGA, Indira Awas Yojana, and PMGRY among other schemes. With Assembly polls staring at its face, Assam Government has been making frantic attempts to get early sanction of funds.

The Chief Minister a couple of months ago had also met the Rural Development Minister seeking sanction of additional Central assistance for PMGRY.
