GUWAHATI, Sept 30 - Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi has said that of late though the prevalence of cancer cases is increasing, early detection and adequate awareness help in reducing fatality of the disease.
Speaking at a cancer awareness campaign held at the Raj Bhavan here today, Governor Mukhi said that in view of high level of research and development, the clinical treatment of cancer has received a shot in the arm. However, he said that early detection and adequate awareness help in reducing the fatality of cancer.
Prof Mukhi said a woman is the pillar on which the entire family stands. He asked the mother of the family to take the lead in educate her family so that the members of the family gain knowledge to know the early signs of cancer and empower themselves against it.
The Governor also said that mothers should take the lead in raising the living standard of the family and lead a healthy life so that cancer cells cannot attack a healthy body. He also laid stress on a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise and abstention from smoking and alcohol.
Dr Srabana Mishra Bhagavati, Associate Professor, Department of Preventive Oncology at the Dr B Borooah Cancer Institute (BBCI) here, spoke on cancer in general. Dr Gaurav Das from BBCI spoke on breast cancer, while Dr Dhiraj Das from Deepsikha Foundation spoke on oral cancer and Dr Monalisha Goswami, also from Deepsikha Foundation, spoke on life style and cancer. Dr Mrinmoyee Baruah, secretary Deepsikha Foundation also spoke on the occasion.
The cancer awareness camp organised by Raj Bhavan in association with Deepsikha Foundation and BBCI, witnessed attendance by a large number of women. On the occasion, Executive Director of IOCL S Manchanda handed over a cheque of Rs 37 lakh to the Governor, who in turn handed over the cheque to BBCI for construction of an additional operation theatre on its campus.
First Lady of the State Smt. Prem Mukhi, Secretary to the Governor Sanjib Gohain Baruah and other officers and staff of Raj Bhavan along with others were present at the meeting.
The Governor also launched the Breast Cancer Awareness Month which will run from October 1 to 31.
