Governor lays foundation of martyr�s statue

NALBARI, Sept 20 � Governor Janaki Ballav Patnaik today laid the foundation stone of a statue of Mukunda Kakati, a martyr of the freedom movement of 1942, in the Nalbari Swahid Mukunda Kakati Civil Hospital campus on the occasion of his death anniversary.

Earlier, the Governor along with Revenue Minister Dr Bhumidhar Barman and Health Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, paid rich tributes to the martyr.

In his speech Patnaik said that the sacrifices of the martyrs like Mukunda Kakati not only made the country independent, but also helped it to grow into a great power in the world. He called upon the people to work together to make the State as well as the nation free from poverty.

The Governor also appealed to the State Government to upgrade the Nalbari Swahid Mukunda Kakati Civil Hospital as a medical college and hospital within two or three years.

Speaking at the memorial meeting Dr Bhumidhar Barman said that the State Government has been doing a lot to keep alive the memories of those who sacrificed their lives in the freedom movement. The district hospitals of Sonitpur, Nagaon and Nalbari are named in memory of martyrs, Dr Barman added.
