Governor irked over Brahmaputra Boards failure

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, June 21 The Brahmaputra Board should either be reformed or winded up as the organization has not been able to play the role for which it is set up, observed Governor JB Patnaik.

The Governor expressed concern over large scale erosion in different parts of the State and said that half of Majuli island was lost because of erosion in the last 60 years. If Majuli cannot be protected from erosion, precious heritage of mankind would be lost for ever, he observed.

A white revolution can play a major role in economic development of Assam and the Ministry of Agriculture of the Government of India should take initiative in this regard through the National Dairy Development Board, the Governor said.

Patnaik further said that Assam could be one of the granaries of India if the Government of India provides adequate help for irrigating every inch of the cultivable land. This will also provide employment avenues for the youths of the state, he pointed out.
