By Correspondent

TEZPUR, May 26 The Governor of Assam, who is also the Chancellor of the university, held a meeting with varsity officials at the Raj Bhawan recently.

The meeting was attended by Prof Amarjyoti Choudhury, Pro Vice Chancellor, and Dr Rajeev Doley, Director, Centre for Inclusive Development, on behalf of the university. Dr Doley said that under the Jan Dhan Yojana, the universities of the State should facilitate opening of zero balance bank accounts for villagers in collaboration with nationalised banks.

Appropriate campaign programmes should be organised for this purpose. The action taken report should be sent to the Secretary to the Governor of Assam at the end of every three months.

The Governor instructed the representatives that each university should adopt 10 villages and develop them with a definite and well-planned format with emphasis on creating basic facilities like toilets in schools and making all efforts to recognise the talent in villages. Village development activity should be introduced as a credit course at the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in which the Governor may be invited to witness developmental activities in the villages.

Dr Doley added that the universities should include skill development courses in the curriculum. For this purpose, the universities may take up necessary steps with regard to identification of the skills to be included in the syllabus.

Moreover, each university should form a Swachh Bharat Committee to initiate cleanliness campaigns in the villages of its home district as well as adjacent districts. Such committees should also be formed at the panchayat levels and the University Swachh Bharat Committee should organise cleanliness drives on a regular basis in the villages in association with the panchayat-level committees.

For the Tezpur University, a nine-member committee was formed with Dr Bala Lakhendra, Arindam Khaund, Shivam Mahate, Dibyani Baruah, Puja Saikia, Dr DK Goswami, Durgamoyee Bora, Pranjal Bora and Santosh Chetry as members.
