Governor, CM, AASU condole Lajmi�s death

GUWAHATI, Sept 23 - Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today mourned the demise of filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi, who breathed her last early this morning.

In his condolence message, Mukhi said Lajmi was a filmmaker par excellence and her death was an irreparable loss to the world of cinema. He said Lajmi, who was famous for bringing sidelined issues into mainstream Bollywood movies, was credited for her women-oriented movies. Mukhi also said that films like Ek Pal, Rudaali, and Darmiyaan gave glimpses of her cinematic acumen.

�Her works will definitely be a source of inspiration for the coming generation,� the Governor added.

In his message, Sonowal said, �During her lifetime, she produced several epoch-making, women-oriented films and enriched the Bollywood film industry. Kalpana Lajmi has had an inseparable connection with the cultural life of the State. She along with Dr Bhupen Hazarika produced several timeless creations, which enriched the celluloid world of the country.�

Devasish Sharma, Joint Resident Commissioner at Assam Bhawan in Mumbai, offered floral tributes to Lajmi�s mortal remains at the Oshiwara crematorium on behalf of the Chief Minister.

All Assam Students� Union (AASU) president Dipanka Kumar Nath and general secretary Lurin Jyoti Gogoi, in a statement said, �Kalpana Lajmi was very close to the people of Assam. As a well-wisher, she was with Dr Bhupen Hazarika till the last moment. Her demise is a great loss for the cultural sector of India.�

State Transport Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary and the Bhupen Hazarika Cultural Trust also condoled Lajmi�s demise.
