Governor cautions against quake predictions

By Correspondent

SHILLONG, Nov 6 Meghalaya Governor RS Mooshahary has asked for action against those who make predictions and prophecies disrupting public order.

The Governor addressing a gathering of students at the St Edmunds College here said action must be taken under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code who disrupts public order by making predictions and prophecies.

Referring to a geologists prediction of a massive earthquake having its epicentre in Assam on September 8, 2006, Mooshahary recalled, that on that day normal life was affected considerably. In fact, the Assam Government sounded an alert asking deputy commissioners to chalk out disaster management strategies in case of any eventuality.

The geologist made the prediction based on planetary positions and alignment of the Sun, Moon and Mercury on that day, which was similar to August 15, 1950 when Assam was rocked by one of its worst quakes in history.

Mooshahary said in this modern age education is to liberate the mind and not to confine within narrow superstitious parameters in an obvious dismissal of the 2006 earthquake prediction based on conjecture and not on scientific findings.

Here in the State, there was panic amongst the public when it was predicted by a woman who foresaw in a dream that an earthquake lasting for hours would hit the state on October 24-25.

This promoted East Khasi Hills deputy commissioner Jopthiaw Lyngdoh to ask the media to introspect through an in-house discussion whether it was journalistically ethical to disseminate such information about predictions and prophecies that creates panic amongst the public.
