Gossaigaon AASU fetes meritorious students

GOSSAIGAON, July 11 - The Gossaigaon unit of the All Assam Students� Union felicitated 50 meritorious students who had performed excellently in the last HSLC, HS and High Madrassa examinations from Gossaigaon subdivision on July 8 last at the Gossaigaon Press Club.

A meeting was held under the presidentship of Jaten Roy. The purpose of the meeting was explained by Afzalur Rahman, the general secretary of the Gossaigaon unit of AASU. Santanu Sarkar, literary secretary read out the welcome address, while Abhijit Dey explained the aims and objectives of the AASU. Dhurba Brahma Narzary, Chairman, Gossaigaon Town Committee inaugurated the function by lighting the lamp. Wilbern S Dairmary, ADC in-charge, Gossaigaon subdivision as the chief guest called upon the need of tolerance at the present juncture. Nabajyoti Roy, AGS of the AASU central committee gave a detailed speech on what the AASU was doing for the uplift of Assam and the student committees. Other speakers who spoke on the occasion included Amardwip Roy, Khanin Das, advocate Rahman Abdul Wahed, Shankar Das, Sankar Choudhury, Prafulla Bharali.

Star, distinction holder students were felicitated with phulam gamosas, books, citation and a sapling each. The respective teachers and guardians were also felicitated.

Asom Satra Mahasabha president visits North Bengal satras: The president of the Asom Satra Mahasabha, Jitendra Nath Prodhani visited various satras of North Bengal since June 26- July 3 for spreading of �ek saran naam dharma� established by Guru Srimanta Sankaradeva and Madhabdeva some 550 years ago. This was done for the fostering of brotherhood between the people of Assam and North Bengal. According to the Satradhikar, the tour programme was undertaken in wake of the assault on the Deka Satradhikar of Madhupur Satra Pitambar Roy Bhakat by one Pintu Roy. The culprit must be punished and the satra should be free from all such incidents, the president demanded.
