Gorkha bodies urge Govt to expedite welfare works

UDALGURI, Dec 4 - Several Gorkha organisations of the State, including Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangha (BGP), Assam Gorkha Sammelan (AGS) and All Assam Gorkha Students� Union (AAGSU) have resolved to welcome any peace talks with the militant groups for bringing peace to the State.

A decision in this regard was taken at a joint meeting convened by the BTC region of Assam Gorkha Sammelan and AAGSU here at Udalguri Golmagaon High School premises recently.

The meeting, which was attended by senior leaders of the leading organisations, also appealed to the State Government to expedite welfare works on a priority basis and implement developmental schemes for the Gorkhas.

The meeting, chaired by Damodar Dahal, president of BTC region, Assam Gorkha Sammelan, was attended by representatives of various organisations who shared their views on the political developments in and outside the BTC region. John Chauhan, president of BTC region of AAGSU said that the Gorkhas of this region have been deprived of developmental schemes for many years. Lakshmi Sedain, general secretary of Assam Gorkha Sammelan observed that the Gorkhas of this State should accord priority to any form of peace talks.

The meeting was also addressed by Purna Kirati Rai, president of Udalguri district committee of AAGSU, Pushpadhar Sarmah, Sahitya Akademi awardee, Gayatri Bhattarai, president of Udalguri district committee of Assam Nepali Sahitya Sabha, Madhab Chhetri, vice president of AGS, Dimbeswar Upadhyaya, adviser of BTC region of AAGSU, Pitambar Pathak, president of Baksa district committee of AGS, Durga Bajgain and senior leading citizens, among others.
