Goods train derails off Guwahati, rail traffic hit

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Aug 25 - Rail communication to Upper Assam, Barak Valley, Tripura and Mizoram was severed after some coaches of a goods train derailed at a spot between Digaru and Panbari, near here, this morning. No one was injured in the accident.

Pranab Jyoti Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), said 15 coaches of the goods train coming towards Guwahati from Lumding derailed while another five coaches capsized around 11.30 am.

There is a double track in that particular stretch. As both the tracks were affected by the derailment, communication in the Lumding-Guwahati section was affected and passage of trains through that section has stopped completely.

Senior railway officials are camping on the spot, and staff are working to clear the section and repair the damage to the railway track, Sharma said. Investigation is on to ascertain the cause of the accident.

Sharma said efforts were being made to ensure that the line is cleared soon so that normal traffic can resume.

Meanwhile, around 30 trains both long-distance and local have either been cancelled, partially cancelled, short terminated or regulated at various stations following the accident.
