Good Samaritans offer food to lockdown-hit poor

GUWAHATI, April 11 - Responding to the appeal made by the State government, people from different walks of life have been distributing food items among the poor and needy people of the city during the lockdown hours.

On Saturday senior official of the Assam Legislative Assembly Archana Sarma distributed food items among 20 poor families in Shantipur locality here. Recently her husband and former justice Biplab Kumar Sarma had donated Rs 2 lakh to the Assam Arogya Nidhi.

Similarly, Public Relation Officer of the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) Sanatan Das distributed food items among ten families in Kharghuli locality recently. Another State government employee Ajit Das also fed six poor families at Azara.

The Indian Red Cross Society, Guwahati District Branch today distributed relief materials comprising rice, dal, flour, edible oil, salt and potato to over a hundred families near the Red Cross Hospital, Chandmari. It had undertaken a similar drive on April 9 also.

The management of Hotel Bellevue also distributed food items among needy people at Uzanbazar Jahazghat here on Friday.

Guwahati-based Abhinandan Foundation, a group of children residing in different slum areas, recently carried out a three-day relief distribution drive in Bhaskar Nagar and Bamunimaidam areas. The drive covered around 100 poor families.

The Bhabendra Nath Saikia Children Welfare Trust and Inli Foundation recently donated Rs 60,000 to the State government. City-based businessman Rameswar Talukder also distributed food items among poor people at Geetanagar recently.
