IMPHAL, March 25 - The Christian community of Manipur today observed Good Friday with people attending special services and holy communion in the churches across the State. People observed mourning and fasting on the day of Jesus�s crucifixion. The Catholics here conducted prayers in their respective churches.
The observance was held in the important churches in and around Imphal, including the Manipur Baptist Convention, Tangkhul Baptist Church, Don Bosco Catholic Church, etc. Feasts were also organised in Churachandpur town.
The Christian leaders expressed the need to extend help and cooperation to others while observing the auspicious day. The Christians are now ready to celebrate the Easter Sunday with special programmes in the State. A mass baptism of newly inducted believers numbering more than 50 will be held on the resurrection day by pastors at the Phungyo Baptist Church, the oldest church in Ukhrul town, on Easter Sunday.
Most shops and business establishments remained closed in the Christian-inhabited areas of Imphal and other hill districts like Chandel, Churachandpur, Senapati, Tamenglong and Ukhrul on Friday.
Manipur Governor V Shanmuganathan, Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh and Deputy Speaker of the State Assembly Preshaw Shimray had earlier greeted the people of the State on the occasion of Good Friday.
Shillong Correspondent adds: Christians in Meghalaya observed Good Friday, which commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
Christian faithfuls observe Good Friday as a day of penance, fasting and prayer. On the occasion, the Cathedral Church of Mary Help of Christians held special prayer services. It is one of the biggest churches in the State. Special prayers were also offered at churches with different denominations.
