JORHAT, Oct 28 � The golden jubilee celebration of Hemalata Handiqui Memorial Institute (HHMI) started today with the hoisting of the school flag by Anil Kumar Barooah, HHMI trustee and chairperson of the school�s governing board in the morning.

In the general meeting, Bijoy Krishna Handique, former Union minister of DoNER and Mines, delivered the welcome speech depicting the long course of five decades the institute had gone through. He also remembered his association with the students from Arunachal Pradesh and the hostel which was christened as Tirap House.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi in his speech said that only through education a nation can prosper in the course of time. He also remembered the memory of late scholar Krishna Handique and his contribution towards the field of education.

Arunachal Pradesh Agriculture Minister Setong Sena participating in the meeting expressed his satisfaction to see the institute flourish during the last fifty years.

Vineet Joshi, the chairman of Central Board of Secondary Education, also spoke on the occasion.

Ahalya Gogoi, noted litterateur, Kabita Rajguru, noted educationist and social worker and chairperson of the school management committee, Tapan Dutta, noted sports organizer and agricultural scientist, Rana Goswami, MLA, Jorhat and many other dignitaries were present in the meeting.

A biography of Hemalata Handiqui titled Mur Ai and authored by Handiqui�s daughter, Ahalya Gogoi, a souvenir titled Time Present, Time Past, a chronicle of the school�s history, and an HHMI Alumni Directory were released in the function today.

Tomorrow at 8 am a colourful procession of the alumni will be taken out from Jorhat Club, from where the institute first started functioning in 1962. The procession will be led by the senior ex-students from 1969 to 1975 batches. Several senior students like Shantanoo Ganguli, Indrani Baruah, Nagesh Singh, Prabhat Bezbaruah, Arun Behel and Amitabh Deb who studied during the early stages of the school were present in the golden jubilee function.

An alumni meet will be held tomorrow at the Golden Jubilee Hall, which has been renovated completely. The Golden Jubilee Hall will also be inaugurated tomorrow.

A cultural nite and dinner will also organized at Gymkhana Club, Jorhat in which the ex-students of the institute till the 2006 batch will be allowed to take part.
