Golden Globe: Clooney, Streep bag best actor, actress

LOS ANGELES, Jan 16 (IANS): George Clooney and Meryl Streep walked away with the Golden Globe trophies for best performance by an actor and an actress respectively in a motion picture - drama.

Clooney won the best actor golden trophy for "The Descendents", beating Leonardo DiCaprio for "J. Edgar", Michael Fassbender for "Shame", Ryan Gosling for "The Ides Of March" and Brad Pitt for "Moneyball".

Streep received the best actress award for "The Iron Lady". She was competing for the top award with Glenn Close for "Albert Nobbs", Viola Davis for "The Help", Rooney Mara for "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" and Tilda Swinton for "We Need To Talk About Kevin".

Meanwhile, Jean Dujardin was awarded the Golden Globe trophy for best performance by an actor in a motion picture - musical or comedy category for "The Artist". Michelle Williams won the award for best performance by an actress in a motion picture - musical or comedy - for "My Week With Marilyn".

Martin Scorsese best director: Martin Scorsese has won the best director - motion picture Golden Globe award for his film "Hugo".

The 69-year-old pipped Woody Allen for "Midnight In Paris", George Clooney for "The Ides Of March", Michel Hazanavicius for "The Artist" and Alexander Payne for "The Descendants" to win the golden trophy.

Set in 1930s Paris, "Hugo" is the story of an orphan who lives at a train station. He is wrapped up in a mystery involving his late father and an automaton.
