SHILLONG, March 2 - Customs officials seized 2.33 kg of gold from a smuggler here on Wednesday, which is valued at about Rs 72 lakh.
The arrested person hails from Karimganj Bazaar, Assam and was nabbed with the illegal consignment when he was trying to take the gold to his hometown for further sale. The consignment was in the form of 20 gold biscuits.
Customs officials, during preliminary investigation, learnt that the illegal consignment was smuggled into the country from Bangladesh. Investigation is on to get to the bottom of this illegal trade, Custom officials said.
