UDALGURI, May 16 The successful culmination of the Udalguri Beach Festival-II on May 13-14 for the second consecutive year running proved that the skillful and talented people of Udalguri are second to none. For two days, the Golandi river looked like the Mediterranean sea beach with convergence of young men and women for events such as beach football (16 boys and four girls teams), beach volleyball (32 boys and 14 girls teams), sand castle making, along with calypso bands where Udalguris generation next danced to Samba beats.
Frills apart, the level of enthusiasm and competitiveness displayed by the teams was of an exceptional order with spectators watching from the edge of their seats at the bridge over Golandi. The Auxilium Junior College team II beat the Auxilium Junior College team I to lift the crown in the girls beach volleyball final, while Udalguri College swept aside Diamond English School to lift the boys crown. In the beach football competition, Diamond English School emerged victorious trouncing Auxilium Junior College in the girls section, and in the much-awaited boys final, which turned out to be a cliff hanger with the match hanging on the razors edge till the final whistle, Udalguri College beat Udalguri Higher Secondary School.
In the sand castle making contest which was held in three categories for children including for the special children, the skillful people of Udalguri proved that they are a cut above the rest, with various sand monuments varying from forts, palaces, temples, churches, mosques, pagodas, environment, wild life, national integration etc., befitting for participation at an international meet, particularly the special children who displayed much higher sense of concentration, will power, and thought process.
What left everybody bewildered was entertainment that an event like this provided for a strife-torn district like Udalguri plagued with ethnic fighting, lawlessness and a prolonged insurgency. The festival was not only a launch pad for promoting talent but, a step towards bridging diverse people and community development through recreation and sport, with young minds and women empowerment the focus to change the course of an evolving society. The Udalguri beach festival, a joint initiative of the Udalguri Army Camp, YPM Media and ADWAR, other than bringing fun and frolic to the people of Udalguri also gave them the confidence to aspire big.
