DERGAON, April 26 - The residents of Golaghat district have resented the pathetic condition of Asian Highway No. 1 (NH 39) from Numaligarh to Chilanijan near Garampani in Karbi Anglong district of upper Assam.
The NH 39 whose new number is NH 102 is assigned as the Asian Highway No. 1 which goes from Numaligarh to the Indo-Myanmar border through Nagaland and Manipur and is 435 km long. The road is so vital for the Central governments Act East Policy that the Indo-Asian car rally traversed through this road in 2015. The road is the connecting road to Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia etc., of South-east Asia.
The road is mostly used by the residents of Golaghat to go to Karbi Anglong district of Assam and Dimapur of Nagaland. The whole road from Numaligarh to Chilanijan is in a sorry state but the condition of the stretch from Rangajan to Chilanijan through Nambar-Daoigroang Wildlife sanctuary with a length of 36 km, is the worst. The whole road looks like a big ditch. Some of the ditches are so big that small vehicles are completely enter to the pond like ditches. As a result, traffic jams are frequent on the road.
Another problem faced by the travellers is that there is no garage and petrol pump in the entire 45 km length from Rangajan to Santipur in Karbi Anglong district. Due to this, the truck drivers have to face serious problems due to bad road conditions. Though the government has changed the name of the policy to Act East Policy, in practice no action has been taken, a resident of Rangajan said.
