Golaghat Police nabs 5 in truck hijack case

By Correspondent

DERGAON, April 28 - Golaghat Police arrested five persons for allegedly being involved in hijacking of two trucks, on Friday.

Police arrested Amzad Khan, Raju Ali alias Samsuddin Ahmed, Abhijit Bora, Raja Kalita and Sumki Hatibaruah of Golaghat for their alleged involvement in the hijacking case. The hijacking of the two trucks took a queer twist as one of the vehicles was hijacked by the owner itself.

Abhijit Bora, who owned a truck, along with other persons filed an FIR at Garchuk Police Station of Guwahati that two trucks carrying 1,000 cartons of foreign liquor each went missing from the road in between Guwahati and Jorhat on March 6 last.

Garchuk Police subsequently handed over the case to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), following which Assam Police finally traced the name of Amzad Khan of Golaghat in whose residence the foreign liquor was stored and then sold. Police said that the culprits first sold the foreign liquor and then the trucks, which were disposed off for Rs 24 lakh. Golaghat Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Dipak Bora told The Assam Tribune, first we nabbed Amzad, and following his confession, we nabbed Raju.

Raju confessed to the involvement of Abhijit, Raja and Sumki in the case. Later, we nabbed all of them, Bora said.

As the case pertains to Garchuk Police Station, so we handed over the persons to Garchuk police for investigation, the OC added.

In the meantime, police is trying to locate the money trail after selling of the trucks.

Interestingly, police revealed that Amzad and Abhijit are history-sheeters who also run an anti-graft NGO.
