Golaghat civic boards failure to supply drinking water resented

By Correspondent

DERGAON, April 27 - The residents of Golaghat town have resented the acute negligence of municipality board in supplying drinking water to the residents.

As many as 50,000 residents of the 13 wards of Golaghat town solely depend on the water supply scheme of the municipality board. But due to the in different role of the board, the residents have to face serious problems even to get a single bucket of water.

The board authority always defends itself in the name of power cut, transformer failure, electric motor malfunctioning, leakage in distribution pipes etc.

Amidst such objections, a major allegation has been made against the board that the reservoir tank of the board Jamuna tank was polluted with weeds and mud.

After extensive reporting of an outbreak of typhoid in Golaghat town, the board submitted a scheme to the Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) for a project to clean the tank at a cost of Rs 19 lakh and the NRL sanctioned the scheme.

The board allotted the work of cleaning the tank to a contractor a month ago. The contractor started the cleaning of the tank with a vacuum truck but he left the work half done as his vehicle could not do the job. The board had therefore tried to clean the weeds of the tank only at a cost of Rs 19 lakh.

Replying to a question on cleaning of the tank, the vice chairman of the board Juri Das Rajkhowa told media persons that she knew nothing regarding the cleaning work. After receiving allegations from different corners, the Golaghat Deputy Commissioner Dhiren Hazarika visited the cleaning site on Friday and was astonished over the unsatisfactory work.

Hazarika asked the executive officer of the board and the Deputy director of Town and Country Planning, the executive engineer of Public Health and Engineering (PHE) etc., to take immediate action to solve the drinking water problems of the residents within two to three days.
