Golaghat admin ready for civic polls

DERGAON, Feb 7 � The Golaghat district administration is ready to conduct the civic polls to the Golaghat and Dergaon municipalities in a free and fair manner, which are scheduled on February 9, said Golaghat Deputy Commissioner Nitin Khade.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday at the conference hall of the DC�s office, Khade said all works related to the civic polls are going on and as many as 239 polling officials would be engaged in 39 polling stations under the 13 municipal wards under the Golaghat Municipal Board (GMB) and 10 wards under the Dergaon Municipal Board (DMB).

The DC said that there are 28,485 eligible voters (14,545 males and 13,850 females), who will elect 13 ward representatives to the GMB in 30 polling stations. As many as 17,266 voters (8,869 males and 8,397 females) will decide the fate of candidates in the 10 wards of the DMB in 19 polling stations.

Khade urged all the contesting candidates and political parties to adhere to the model code of conduct and warned that any violation would be dealt with firmly according to the election laws.

Golaghat DIPRO Sulakshana Mitsi Kachari said that 94 candidates are contesting the 23 wards under the GMB and the DMB. At the GMB, 13 candidates each of the AGP, BJP and Congress, along with 10 Independent candidates, are in the fray. On the other hand, at the DMB, there are 10 candidates each of the BJP and Congress, nine AGP candidates and 16 Independent candidates for the 10 wards.

It may be mentioned here that according to the election schedule announced by the Assam State Election Commission, voting will take place from 8 am to 4 pm on February 9. The date of repoll (if any) has been fixed on February 11. The counting of votes will begin at 8 am on February 12 and the results will be announced by the evening.
