Gogoi�s heart surgery successfully conducted

GUWAHATI, Aug 4 � Renowned cardiac surgeon Dr Ramakant Panda along with a team of doctors �successfully� conducted bypass and valve replacement surgeries on Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi at the Asian Heart Institute, Mumbai today. The condition of the Chief Minister is now stated to be stable.

A late evening report said that the Chief Minister regained consciousness at around 8.30 pm and shook hands with the doctors.

Official sources in Mumbai said that the operation lasted about seven hours and after the operation, Dr Panda said that he was �satisfied� with the operation. Gogoi was taken to the operation theater at around 6.30 am and a team of 20 doctors headed by Dr Panda performed the twin operations, which lasted for about seven hours. Gogoi was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital at around 3 pm. Doctors said that he would be kept under observation at the ICU for three days and he would have to stay in hospital for about three weeks. The doctors also revealed that there was no complication during the operation.

Gogoi�s family friend, Dr Naba Kumar Goswami, who flew in from the USA yesterday, was also present in the operation theater along with the team of doctors of the Asian Heart Institute.

Sources said that according to the doctors, all the vital organs of the Chief Minister were working perfectly and he is likely to regain senses by tonight. The family members were allowed to meet Gogoi in the ICU this evening, but other visitors will not be allowed to meet him today.

State Power and Industries Minister, Pradyut Bordoloi, who is in Mumbai, told this correspondent this evening that the operations were successful and the condition of the Chief Minister is now stable. The Chief Minister is likely to be kept under observation in the ICU for two or three days, he added.

Bordoloi said that the family members of the Chief Minister were overwhelmed with the messages that they received not only from every nook and corner of Assam but also from different parts of the country and abroad wishing speedy recovery of Gogoi.

Assam Governor JB Patnaik is also in Mumbai and he visited the Asian Heart Institute this evening to enquire about the health of the Chief Minister. Several other ministers including Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain and Education Minister Gautam Bora are also in Mumbai and they are in constant touch with the hospital authorities and family members of the Chief Minister. A number of Congress leaders and workers are also camping in Mumbai.
