Gogoi unaware of States history: AASU

By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, May 25 Criticising Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi for his comments on the All Assam Students Union (AASU) and the Assam Movement during the fourth anniversary function of the State Government on Sunday, the AASU today said that Gogois knowledge about the history and problems of the State is awfully limited.

Alleging that Gogois speech at the anniversary function was an attempt to divert the peoples attention from the core issues affecting the State, the students body challenged him to take steps within 24 hours for detecting and deporting the illegal Bangladeshis who came into the State after 1971.

The Chief Ministers speech was not just discourteous and unacceptable to the civilised society, it also did not highlight the major problems of the State and the utter failure of his Government to solve them, AASU advisor Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya said in a press meet.

On Gogois comment that the AASU is a creation of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the students body said that Gogois remarks reflect his little knowledge about the history of the State, Assam Movement and the AASU.

RSS is a communal force and AASU has no connection with it. Gogoi should abstain from making such remarks that undermine the sacrifice of hundreds of martyrs of the State, he added.

Stressing on the illegal migration problem, he added that the Bangladeshis have entered the Kaziranga National Park also. But both the Chief Minister and the Forest Minister are silent on the issue, which shows their affinity towards the illegal intruders.

He further mentioned that instead of the meaningless utterances in the public about the black-marketeers of Fancy Bazar, the Chief Minister should take action against such traders who are responsible for price rise. In the capacity of the Chief Minister of the State, he has the power and the responsibility to check price rise, he mentioned.

Pointing out the failures of the State Government, the AASU said that the schools of the State do not have adequate numbers of teachers. Many of them are running without headmasters and permanent chairmen of the school committees. The borders of the State are not secured and inter-State border dispute has become a regular problem. On the issue of big river-dams also, the State Government is compromising on the interests of the people of Assam.

Though the State Government boasts of its achievements in the public, the reality is that the State has not made any remarkable social or economic development during the terms of Gogois government, the AASU leader alleged.
