Gogoi to undergo open heart surgery

By Spl correspondent

NEW DELHI, July 26 It was grim news for Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi as the angiography test done on him detected at least two heart blockages. He is likely to undergo an open heart surgery.

A team of doctors led by Dr Pervez Ahmed is continuously monitoring Gogois health, whose condition was stated to be stable. On Monday, an angiography test was conducted at the Max Hospital, which led to detection of two partial blockages of about 70-80 per cent, sources revealed.

The team of experts including Rupa Salwan and Dr Riktik Bhuyan has reportedly advised open heart surgery for one blockage and coronary angiography for the other, sources added.

Gogois daughter, who has settled in US, is reported to be on her way to Delhi. His son too is in the States and the family is shortly expected to take a decision on where to have the operations done. The Chief Ministers options may be limited to AIIMS, Indraprastha Apollo and Escort Heart Institute and Hospital in Delhi.

However, sources said the Max Hospital too is ready and waiting for familys decision. The Chief Minister was taken ill on Saturday at the meeting of the National Development Council (NDC), when he complained of breathlessness.

The Chief Minister who is around 77-year-old, already has a pacemaker installed. Doctors indicated that he is likely to be in the hospital for at least six weeks and may have to undergo complete rest for a couple of months after that.

Meanwhile, the ban on visitors continued and several State ministers made rounds of the Hospital to meet him. Yesterday, Union Minister for DoNER, Bijoy Krishna Handique called on him in the afternoon. Also doing the frequent rounds since last three days is State Minister Akon Bora, whose election was declared void by Gauhati High Court recently.
