Gogoi mourns PA Sangma�s demise

GUWAHATI, March 4 - Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has deeply mourned the demise of veteran politician and former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno A Sangma.

In a statement here today, Gogoi said that Sangma strode like a colossus in the political firmament spanning several decades and worked relentlessly for the development of Meghalaya in particular and the North East region in general. �A nationalist to the core and a man of all seasons, I had met him on umpteen occasions when he was a Congress leader for many years and during his eventful stint as a Speaker. We attended many programmes and discussed many issues confronting the region and the country as a whole. Sangmaji�s amiable and affable nature endeared him to everyone who met him,� he said, adding that the void created by his death would be hard to fill.

The Chief Minister, while extending his condolences to the members of the bereaved family, prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul.

The BJP, Assam Pradesh, has also condoled the demise of PA Sangma. Party president Sarbananda Sonowal, in a message, expressed his grief and shock and said that the country would remember the contributions of the politician of the masses. He also extended his sympathies to the bereaved family.

The AGP, while expressing its grief, remembered the role played by Sangma in regional as well as national politics. The party said that it has lost its well wisher.

The Sachetan Nagarik Mancha, Assam has also expressed sorrow over the news. The Mancha observed a minute�s silence for the departed soul during a programme held at the Guwahati Press Club here.

APCC president Anjan Dutta has also mourned PA Sangma�s death.
