Gogoi meets Sonia over Naga Accord

By Spl CORRESPONDENT

NEW DELHI Aug 8 - Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today called on Congress president Sonia Gandhi to discuss the Naga peace accord. The three Congress chief ministers of Assam, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh had yesterday met vice president Rahul Gandhi and briefed him about the ground situation in the three states.

Later, Gogoi told newsmen that they had deliberated on the Centres reluctance to take the three chief ministers into confidence. He said he was not aware whether the Nagaland Chief Minister was taken on board.

Gogoi said the Naga agreement should be kept confined to Nagaland. He also opposed the idea of granting autonomy to Naga-inhabited areas in the neighbouring states.

Only the state governments concerned can give autonomy, he argued. There are lots of Assamese people living in the national capital; would the Centre then agree to give an autonomous state to them, he asked.

Settlement is welcome, but it should not affect the neighbouring states, he said.

Yesterday, Gogoi had said that he would not seek an appointment with the Prime Minister to ask for a clarification about the NSCN agreement, if Modi kept on ignoring them.

Gogoi further added that he discussed organisational matters and some key issues with Smt Gandhi. He is still waiting for a green signal to expand his ministry amidst the threat posed by a section of his partymen to split the organisation.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister ordered an inquiry into the incident in Guwahati yesterday, when miscreant prevented installation of a statue of Don Bosco.
