Gogoi lays stress on power generation

GUWAHATI, Aug 20 � Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today stressed the need for power generation from diverse sources to meet the growing energy needs of the State and propel it into the path of development.

Addressing a function organized on the occasion of Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urja Divas at Cotton College by the Assam Energy Development Agency, Gogoi said that exploring the prospects of energy generation from different sources, including non-conventional and renewable ones, was a dire need in view of the depleting energy reserves across the world.

Gogoi said that the State Government was also according adequate thrust of harnessing energy from diverse sources. Referring to the distribution of solar lamps in remote and inaccessible areas not covered by conventional power grids, he said that there was a lot of scope for tapping the potential of renewable energy like wind, solar, biomass, etc.

Terming the late Rajiv Gandhi as a visionary, Gogoi said that he dreamt of building a modern, prosperous India and laid special emphasis on science and technology.

Addressing another function to mark Sadbhavana Divas commemorating the 67th birth anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi, the Chief Minister announced that the State Government would set up a museum for children and a school for meritorious students of poor families in the name of the late Prime Minister.

The Chief Minister also stressed the need for eliminating corruption from every stage of society, saying that laws alone were not sufficient for the purpose. He said that awareness and use of latest scientific technologies could also play a key role in eradicating the scourge.
