Gogoi jubilant over honour to Tezpur varsity

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Feb 27 - Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today said the news of Tezpur University being adjudged the best Central University in the country this year by the Ministry of Human Resource Development will be a big boost not only to the university but also to the education sector in the State as a whole.

In a statement here today, Gogoi said that he was doubly happy that Tezpur University bagged the prestigious award as he had been instrumental in persuading the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi for two Central universities, one at Tezpur and the other at Silchar. It is rare to find two Central varsities in any State. Thanks to Rajivji that he heeded to my plea for two Central varsities in Assam.

Extending his heartiest congratulations to Vice Chancellor Mihir Kanti Chaudhuri, the teaching and non-teaching fraternity and the students, past and present for the honour, Gogoi hoped that the university would continue its tryst with academic excellence and scale new heights of glory in the days ahead.

The award will be presented to the university by President Pranab Mukherjee on March 14. Last year, the award was conferred on Hyderabad University.
