The Chief Minister, who called on Congress president Sonia Gandhi in what appears to be a significant meeting, admitted that the issue of advancing the polls figured in discussion.

There is no possibility of advancing the Assembly elections, due next year, he said.

He said he is aware that there is a debate even within his party on the issue, and a few States also favoured such an idea, but elections in Assam would not be advanced.

The Chief Minister, meanwhile, treated the Congress president with best of litchi and pineapple brought from Tezpur. These were sent to the Congress presidents house on Tuesday. He told newsmen that the Congress president liked them.

Apart from briefing Gandhi the peace processes with various militant outfits, Gogoi said he also apprised her about the flood problem.

He also briefed her about implementation of the various social sector schemes including NREGA. Yesterday, the Chief Minister had sought Rs 800 crore for implementation of PMGRY.

Meanwhile, Gogoi said he was in favour of the caste census. I support the viewpoint because we need to know the exact figure, he added.
