Gogoi Govt harassing Hindu Bengalis: BJP

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 1 The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Assam Pradesh on Friday alleged that the Tarun Gogoi-led Congress Government was harassing the Hindu Bengalis in the State in a similar way as was happening in Bangladesh.

Shiladitya Dev, spokesperson of the party said at a press meet here that the Hindu Bengalis are not safe in the hands of the Congress which is using the Pick and Choose' policy to brand them as foreigners just to appease the Bangladeshi Muslims and garner their votes.

Dev said that about 4,265 voters in Hojai Assembly are being deprived of their Election Photo Identity Cards (EPIC) even though their names are in the electoral roll published recently are not marked D (Doubtful).

Hojai, which is predominantly a Hindu majority assembly, already has 2,118 D-voters. What is the reason for such a large number of D-voters and so many new cases now coming to light, questioned Dev.

Dev further said that the Congress has always played the communal card on the issue of illegal influx from Bangladesh. They have never been supportive to the Hindu migrants who are far less in number than the Muslim migrants which has changed the demography of the state, mentioned Dev adding that in the minority dominated assembly constituencies, like Jamunamukh there are only 374 D-Voters and another 380 new cases have been reported, while in Hailakandi assembly there are 29 D-votersand in Hajo 130 D-voters.

Dev also referred to a case of Gurudeb Mandal of Sambaria Gaon in Hojai who is a voter in polling station no 225 but has a new case against him and has been refused EPIC from the booth level officer (BLO).

His father Munindra Mandal against whom a case was registered vide No.627/88 in the Foreigners Tribunal and was declared as foreigner of the stream 1966-71 registered himself in the Foreigner Regional Registration Office (FRRO), Nagaon as per norms and subsequently after 10 years waiting period he was cleared by Superintendent of Police (FRRO) Nagaon in 2005. But now Gurudeb, who has been a genuine voter since 2005, has been told by his BLO that he cannot get his EPIC since a case No. 3463/98 is pending against him.

Dev also said that in the polling station No. 225 there are 93 voters against whom new cases have been reported, out of which 80 voters are Hindus. He reiterated that the State government should restrain its officials from lodging false cases and stop harassing the Hindu migrants. He said that the Hindu migrants cannot be deported to Bangladesh since that country has been killing Hindus in a systematic and regular manner and has become an Islamic state.
