Goalpara scribes protest Gauri Lankesh killing

By Correspondent

GOALPARA, Sept 16 - The Goalpara District Journalists Association (GDJA) expressing solidarity with other journalist associations across the country staged a one-hour sit-in demonstration from 12 to 1 pm in front of the Deputy Commissioners office on Thursday.

Condemning the brazen and dastardly killing, the GDJA termed this as an attack on freedom of expression and an attempt to throttle the voices of those who believe in democracy.

In a memorandum addressed to the Union Home Minister through the Deputy Commissioner, Goalpara, the GDJA demanded a high-level inquiry to investigate the killing of journalist Gauri Lankesh and immediately apprehend the perpetrators of the crime. The Association also demanded that the process of investigation be fast tracked.

The GDJU further demanded that the State as well as the Central Government should enact Journalist Safety Laws to ensure protection and to prevent recurrence of such attacks in the future.
