GOALPARA, July 14 - The overall flood situation has worsened in Goalpara district on Tuesday with Brahmaputra flowing .84 metres above the danger level at 37.11 metres inundating new areas and displacing thousands of people from a total of 192 worst-affected villages under the Lakhipur, Matia, Balijana and Ranjuli revenue circles, according to a flood bulletin.
Reliable sources and eyewitnesses said that flooding continued from the 1.5 kilometre breached embankment on Brahmaputra at Chilarbhita under the Jaleswar Assembly constituency and with inundation of catchment areas, it has created panic as flood waters have gradually entered new areas under Lakkhipur, Matia and Balijana revenue circles and also in Balijana revenue circle.
Meanwhile, the flood bulletin mentioned that a total 2,50,259 people from 97 villages under Lakhipur, 30 villages under Matia, 57 villages under Balijana and 8 under Ranjuli revenue circles have been affected so far while a total of 7,213 hectares of crop land have been inundated by flood waters under Lakhipur revenue circle.
A total of 21 relief camps have been opened and animals including 36,962 big, 19,693 small and 60,515 poultry were affected, according to the bulletin.
