GOALPARA, May 26 - Following incessant rains during the last few days, the first wave of floods have inundated fresh areas affecting around 1,68,196 people at 140 villages under Balijana and Lakhipur revenue circles, according to an official bulletin.
The water levels of all the major rivers like the Dudhnoi, Krishnai and Jinjiram in the district are rising due to heavy rains in the area while the Jinjiram river is flowing above the danger mark.
A total of 28 relief camps have been set up in these two-revenue circles to provide food and shelter to a total of 8941 inmates including 3095 females and 2281 children, according to official sources.
Earlier on Sunday, the floodwaters washed away a portion of the Agia-Lakhipur road at Sigri, which is around 5 km away from Lakhipur town, snapping road communications.
Meanwhile, floodwaters have also submerged roads and some houses in the worst-affected areas under Lakhipur revenue circle.
However, no casualty has been reported so far. Relief materials have been distributed among the affected victims and there were no complaints of shortages.
