By Correspondent

GOALPARA, Sept 11 - Buoyed by the recent success of the implementation of phase I of the Krishi Kalyan Abhiyan under which various activities were undertaken to promote best farming practices and enhance agriculture income, in which the aspirational district of Goalpara secured 1st position on the basis of an all-India ranking, the district Agriculture department has embarked upon a few new innovative schemes recently. The objective is to assist the farmers with new working strategies and technologies by which they can develop agriculture as a business venture and also as a security of their livelihood.

Talking to this correspondent, the District Agriculture Officer, Budhindra Hazarika said that one of the innovative projects is to work along with the Forest Department, the Veterinary Department and with the Joint forest management committees for integrating environmental concerns for enhancing the agro ecosystem. He pointed out that as almost 42% of land in the district is under forests, our initiative will be on possible restoration of some of the patches of the forest land which are barren, by planting trees just to start the process of rehabilitation of the ecosystem and later turn it to a food and timber forest so that it can become a habitat for animals, birds and insects. He added that such schemes will encourage individuals and institutions to come forward for protection of the forest and environment.

Talking of other innovative schemes, Hazarika pointed out that emphasis will also be laid on agriprenurship for the uplift of agriculture by revitalising agriculture to make it a profitable and attractive venture. He added that agri clinics will be established at various places across the district and also a few schemes under protected agriculture like poly houses, upgradation of high-tech nurseries will be undertaken in the district.
