GUWAHATI, Oct 29 - On the occasion of World Stroke Day, GNRC Hospitals today urged citizens to take care of their health and spread awareness about stroke, apart from emphasising the importance of recognising the signs of stroke and seeking treatment quickly.
According to Dr Nomal Chandra Borah, the incidence and burden of stroke is increasing in India due to unhealthy and sedentary lifestyle along with an ageing population. Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability in India.
This year�s theme for World Stroke Day is �1 in 4 for of us will have a stroke, don�t be the one.�
According to Dr Borah, there are 10 things that need to be done in order to prevent stroke. �By creating awareness about these 10 things we can surely reduce the prevalence and incidence of stroke. We need to educate people about symptoms of stroke, preventive measures as well as treatment options so as to save maximum people from the deadly clutches of stroke and permanent disability. Anybody, anywhere, any time can have a stroke. We can easily prevent a stroke by following a healthy lifestyle with proper diet, avoiding smoking and alcohol, doing physical activity or exercise on a regular basis and avoiding overweight and obesity.� He further said, �We need to keep alert against five lifestyle diseases to keep a check on stroke. These five diseases are hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, atrial fibrillation and stress and depression.�
GNRC, through various community engagement program-mes, seeks to create awareness about early signs of stroke � F.A.S.T. (Face drooping; Arm weakness; Speech slurred; Time to call an ambulance), to alleviate human suffering.
Senior neurologist Dr Rupjyoti Das, interventional radiologist Dr Firdaus Ahmed and neurosurgeon Dr Naba Jyoti Borah from GNRC shed light on various treatment options of stroke covering neurological, interventional and surgical aspects.
