GNLA ultra killed in encounter

SHILLONG, Feb 4 - A wanted Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militant was shot dead while many others were suspected to have sustained injuries in an encounter in a remote village in Meghalaya�s South West Garo Hills district, police said today.

Acting on a tip off, special police teams raided Santogre village in South West Garo Hills district during which an encounter took place between the security personnel and GNLA militants numbering around 6-7 who were holed up at the camp, IG (Operations) GHP Raju said.

The incident took place at around 10 pm last night and the militant who received fatal bullet wounds was identified as Reading M Sangma, he said.

Police suspected that many other who were present in the camp were also injured and a combing operation is on to nab all of them, Raju said.

From the site of the encounter, a 7.65 mm pistol with one magazine and two live rounds, two 7.65 shells and seven empty cases of 7.62 and ammunition for AK rifles were recovered, he said.

GNLA, formed in 2010, is active in five Garo Hills districts and are involved in kidnapping, extortion and killings, the police said. � PTI
