GNLA foreign secretary surrenders in Garo Hills

By Biplab Kr Dey

TURA, March 9 - Militancy in Garo Hills region seems to be on its last legs with another senior cadre of Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) today surrendering without arms to the police at Baghmara in South Garo Hills (SGH).

Bryian R Marak (Millam), about 40 years-old and a resident of Ringregittim in Tura, today surrendered in the presence of SGH Deputy Commissioner Shella N Marak, SP, AT Sangma, Church elders and NGO members at a surrender ceremony today.

Millam was the GNLAs foreign secretary (FS) since he joined the outfit in 2011. He was working as the FS after being sent to Bangladesh by GNLA to handle the outfits relations with other outfits based there. He was to communicate with other outfits regarding logistics, said SP, Abraham T Sangma.

The former foreign secretary had earlier been arrested by Bangladesh police on Dec 15, 2012 and spent 10 months in a Bangladesh jail for illegally entering the country without a proper Indian passport.

The surrender follows the high profile surrender of entire ASAK group led by Reding T Sangma providing tremendous relief to people affected by the saga of mass kidnappings by the outfit.

The continuing surrenders of other militants of GNLA has raised expectations of an end to two decades of strife in Garo Hills.
